Survey/Project Name: Adelaide Dolphin Sanctuary Monitoring Program
Abstract: This project aims to focus on the Adelaide Dolphin Sanctuary (ADS), located near Adelaide, South Australia, covering an area of 118 square kilometres, including the Port River, Barker Inlet, Outer Harbor and North Haven marinas, reaching as far north as Port Gawler. This area is home to a resident group of Common Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops sp.), and includes key habitat features such as mangroves, seagrass, saltmarsh, tidal flats and tidal creeks, which all provide habitat for the dolphins and their food resources. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of the ADS Monitoring Program are to: 1. obtain baseline data on the movements, abundance, distribution, demography and behaviours of dolphins within the ADS; 2. develop and maintain a long term database of individually identified dolphins within the ADS. Information is also opportunistically collected for other wildlife, including Australian Sea Lion, Long-nosed Fur Seal (New Zealand Fur Seal), White-bellied Sea-Eagle, Osprey, migratory waders and shorebirds etc.

Start Date: 28/01/2015      End Date: 01/01/2020
Survey Type: Vegetation and Fauna

Study Area Description: Adelaide Dolphin Sanctuary boundaries
Objectives
         Vegetation: Refer to Abstract.
         Fauna: Refer to Abstract.
Methodology
Vegetation: *** No vegetation methodology recorded
Fauna: To achieve the project objectives, boat surveys are undertaken along specific transects within the ADS. When a group of dolphins is encountered on a survey, information is collected on group location, size and composition. Images are then taken of each dolphin's dorsal fin for photo identification purposes. Information is also opportunistically collected for other wildlife, including Australian sea lions, long-nosed fur seals, white-bellied sea eagles, ospreys, migratory waders and shorebirds etc.

Data Distribution Rules: Public Dataset
Project Basis: Fauna : Opportunistic records - casual obs no fixed methodology
Fauna : Monitoring - Fauna/Ecosystem (ie species records - usually re-visited for ongoing monitoring) NOTE:NON Std Svy methodology may have been used.
