Survey/Project Name: Beautiful Firetail AMLR Region Surveys
Abstract: This project aims to conduct intensive surveys to better determine the abundance and distribution of Beautiful Firetail (Stagonopleura bella) in the Deep Creek Conservation Park, south of Adelaide, South Australia (SA), with most records in the Deep Creek and Boat Harbour Creek catchments, and none in the western-half of the park. The Beautiful Firetail occurs in coastal and sub-coastal south-eastern Australia, including Tasmania. The Beautiful Firetail is listed Rare in SA under the schedules of the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972. Little is known of the ecology of the Beautiful Firetail although they appear to be largely sedentary, occurring in pairs with a large home-range during winter-spring, and in small groups in summer-autumn. During the latter they may disperse more widely to access drinking water.

Fauna: A field survey was conducted in 2013 to provide further information on species distribution and status in the Mount Lofty Ranges. Based on previous records a total of 10 days was spent searching areas of past reports and potential habitat. Firetails and other birds seen and heard were noted and positions recorded using a GPS. Reports from Mount Bold Reservoir were not revisited.
