Survey/Project Number: 1035          Total No. of Sites: 0
Survey/Project Name: Pilot excavation of Cathedral Cave- Naracoorte Caves National Park
Abstract: This project aims to assess the taxa and preservation quality of deposits from the initial exploratory excavation of Pit B in the Fossil Chamber of Cathedral Cave (5U12/13), Naracoorte Caves National Park, South Australia. Resulting fossils were used in subsequent Cathedral Cave studies: 1. Middle-Pleistocene vertebrate fossil assemblage - Cathedral Cave by Steven Brown 2. Mammalian responses to Pleistocene climate change by Dr Gavin Prideaux.

Study Area Description: Fossil Chamber, Cathedral Cave (5U12 and 5U13), Naracoorte Caves National Park: Zone 54, Easting 482008, Northing 5900989
Objectives
Vegetation: *** No vegetation survey objectives recorded
Fauna: *** No fauna survey objectives recorded
Methodology
Vegetation: *** No vegetation methodology recorded
Fauna: SAMPLE COLLECTION Dig site now known as Pit B was excavated to an unknown depth. No positional reference system was established and no stratigraphic data were recorded for fossil items. VERTEBRATE FOSSIL PREPARATION Medium-large sized bones were cleaned by brush. Very few items hardened with polyvinyl butyrate solution. Only a few items were taxonomically identified. VERTEBRATE FOSSIL REGISTRATION Some identified items are registered to the Flinders University collection (FU915-919; 920; 1011-1012; 1048-1062; 1065-1082; 1145-1159; 1210). Unidentified items remain unregistered. SEDIMENTARY ANALYSES No analysis of sediments undertaken as part of the pilot project. GEOCHRONOLOGICAL ANALYSES No chronological analysis undertaken as part of the pilot project.
