Survey/Project Number: 1042          Total No. of Sites: 0
Survey/Project Name: Assessing the potential for aDNA research at Naracoorte
Abstract: This research project tested for the presence of ancient DNA in fossil bone from Robertson Cave Entrance Chamber (5U17), Naracoorte Caves National Park, South Australia, building upon project 'Lessons of Past Climate Change -Robertson Cave' by Dr Liz Reed. Project involved analysis of bulk-bone samples from multiple layers in the deposit, to determine the maximum age of ancient DNA in the site. Objectives
Vegetation: *** No vegetation survey objectives recorded
         Fauna: Refer to Abstract.
Methodology
Vegetation: *** No vegetation methodology recorded
Fauna: SAMPLE COLLECTION Fossil material was collected by Dr Liz Reed as per project: Lessons of Past Climate Change - Robertson Cave. Samples for the aDNA project were selected by Dr Amy Macken: 105 bone fragments were randomly collected from screened material from Pit 1, Sections A/B, Layers 1-6 for bulk bone sampling. 81 whole bones were randomly collected and identified from Pit 2, Sections A/B, Layers 1-6 for whole bone sampling (not completed). VERTEBRATE FOSSIL PREPARATION Bulk bone samples were ground up for analysis. Whole bone samples were not used for analyses. VERTEBRATE FOSSIL REGISTRATION Whole bone samples (Pit 2) were registered to the Flinders University fossil collection (FU9152-9232).
