Survey/Project Name: Survey of Spotted Quail-thrush in the Mount Lofty Ranges
Abstract: This project aims to provide information on all of the known records and related information on a subspecies of Spotted Quailthrush (Cinclosoma punctatum), which is endemic to Australia, with three subspecies recognised (Ford 1983, Schodde & Mason 1999). The nominated subspecies occurs along the eastern side Great Dividing Range to the extreme south-east of South Australia. The isolated Mount Lofty Ranges (South Australia) population is the distinct subspecies C. p. anachoreta (Schodde & Mason 1999), based on its smaller size, finer markings on the 'shoulders' (median and lesser wing coverts) and narrow black-tipping to underwing coverts. No live bird of this subspecies has been photographed or song recorded. Concern has been expressed over the absence of records of the Mount Lofty Ranges subspecies of the Spotted Quailthrush since the 1980s, with fears that the taxon may now be extinct. An earlier report (Carpenter 2016) reviewed records of the Spotted Quailthrush from the Mount Lofty Ranges and provided information on its ecology. The current report (Carpenter 2017) provides further information on the localities of the most recent sightings based on a field assessment conducted in late-winter to spring 2016.          Fauna: Refer to Abstract.
Methodology
Vegetation: *** No vegetation methodology recorded
Fauna: Published and unpublished reports have been variously sourced, primarily from the South Australian Ornithologist (journal of the South Australian Ornithological Association), Bird Talk (journal of the Adelaide Ornithologists Club), specimens and eggs in the South Australian Museum and personal communications. David Harper also kindly provided information on his research during the early 2000s. His researches focussed on following up of a 1999 report made during the 2000 biological survey of the Southern Mount Lofty Ranges (Armstrong et al 2003). Field surveys were conducted in late winter - early spring 2016 concentrating in the western part of Mount Bold Reservoir reserve, as this area incorporates the most recent credible report, contains the most extensive undisturbed habitat and is close to other more recent reports in the Clarendon. Cherry Gardens district. In addition, locations of other previous more recent reports were visited (particularly Onkaparinga Gorge NP, Cherry Gardens and Springmount), primarily in order to obtain more information on the habitat at these localities. The survey methods adopted during the survey involved the following: 1. Surveys were concentrated in late winter to early spring; 2. Observers were on-site at first light on fine days to maximise the likelihood of hearing singing males; and 3. Call playback using songs of males recorded in New South Wales was used at each site surveyed (Naturesound 1997 Bird calls of south-east NSW field survey CD).
