Survey/Project Number: 17          Total No. of Sites: 1228
Survey/Project Name: Victorian Mallee - Historic Extract
Abstract: This project aims to examine public land in the area south of the River Murray, east of the South Australian and Victorian border, between 1978 and 1987. OBJECTIVES: 1. Determine the nature and location of the plant communities on public land in the mallee area; 2. Produce a floristic map of the area. The vegetation was described for future use for land use practices, provide information on the rare or threatened plant species, and communities of botanical significance. Concurrently information was investigated on fauna to describe the major faunal habitats. NOTE: This dataset has not been refreshed since the original transfer (pre ~2000).

Start Date: 01/09/1978      End Date: 01/04/1987
Survey Type: Vegetation and Fauna

Study Area Description: Survey of public lands in Victorian Mallee. The mallee area is a vast plain sloping from an altitude of 100m in the south to less than 50m in the north. soils are often calcareous and vary from sands to clays. The climate is semi-arid with hot dry summers and cold winters. The major vegetation types are the low multi-stemmed eucalypts but also includes river red gum, blackbox woodlands, heath, grasslands and saltbush-blue bush plains. South of the Murray River, east of the SA/Vic border, north of 36deg and W of Loddon River (144deg). The survey area is 43,000km2, 16,700km2 of native vegetation within the public land.
Objectives
Vegetation: To determine the nature and location of the plant communities on public land in the mallee area and to produce a floristic map of the area. The vegetation was described for future use for land use practices, provide information on the rare or threatened plant species, and communities of botanical significance. Concurrently information was investigated on fauna to describe the major faunal habitats.
Fauna: *** No fauna survey objectives recorded
Methodology
Vegetation: 30 x 30m quadrats. Estimates of abundance of all vascular plants, basic structural data and information relevant to the site.
Fauna: Sites surveyed for faunal activity were not done with equal intensity.
