| Survey/Project Name: | Freshwater Soaks in Coorong Southern Lagoon (Mapping and Monitoring Methods) |
| Abstract: | This project aims to establish a monitoring program for freshwater soaks in the southern lagoon of the Coorong National Park. The freshwater soaks were mapped, a long term monitoring program was established and flora and fauna data were collected to inform management actions for release of drainage waters in to the Coorong and wetland pondage in Tilley Swamp Watercourse and Morella Basin. The fieldwork was completed from 10 to 13 July, 2001 and freshwater soaks were identified by testing the conductivity of the water with a conductivity meter. Not all sites had standing freshwater so holes were dug and water temperature was also taken. Four sites were permanently marked with steel droppers and vegetation photopoint tags, a GPS marked the steel droppers and photos were taken of the site and mud maps drawn. A plant list was recorded for each site suitable for future monitoring. Identified bird species in a 500 m radius of each soak and the presence of other vertebrate fauna was recorded (scats, tracks, digging and grazing). This report is a summary of monitoring on 5 fresh water soaks in the southern part of Coorong National Park, this is a continuous long term project. It includes July 2002 and late summer 2003 monitoring. The survey sites were established to monitor changes in water salinity levels in a number of fresh water soaks over time and to monitor any changes to composition and health of the vegetation growing in association with these soaks in response to changes to water regimes in the Tilley Swamp watercourse and Morella basin. |

| Vegetation: | Data taken from soaks comprising new photopoints and older study areas (Elspeth Young), droppers mark sites, initial collection comprising Biological Survey format physical description, fauna and plant voucher specimen forms. For each soak conductivity values (in mS/cm) were taken and later converted to salinity in mg/L. Plant, bird and Vertebrate species were recorded and entered on to local spreadsheet files. Visit period 1 Jul 2002 - 1 May 2003: Data was collected from vegetation transects at soaks in july 2002, march 2003 and may 2003. Appendix 2 of the report has a total plant list for july 2002 winter monitoring and a total plant list for march and may 2003 end of summer monitoring. In july 2001 soak 5, 7 and 8 were surveyed and given photopoint tag numbers and water salinity readings were taken. Data from Bickerton and Winter 2001 survey is used to compare the results of 2002 monitoring for soaks 5, 7 and 8. | ||
