Survey/Project Number: 35          Total No. of Sites: 46
Survey/Project Name: Para Wirra Recreation Park (NPWS 1981)
Abstract: This project aims to conduct a biological survey of Para Wirra Recreation Park, near Adelaide, South Australia, in 1978. METHODOLOGY: 1. Systematically sample vegetation associations, using a series of grids; 2. Map major vegetation associations using photography; 3. Sample vertebrate fauna at a series of sites within each vegetation association in a systematic and repeatable manner.

Start Date: 01/06/1978      End Date: 01/08/1978
Survey Type: Vegetation and Fauna

Study Area Description: Para Wirra Recreation Park is located approximately 40km ENE of Adelaide. It can be divided into six broad topographic regions: The South Para River and its precipitous slopes in the north, the ridges and Wild Dog Creek south of the river. The undulating land to the north of the river, the land north of Humbug Scrub developed for intensive recreation, Hamlin Gully to the west and the southern part of the park dominated by Mack Creek. The park as a whole has an average rainfall of between 500mm and 690mm. Area contained within the boundaries of Para Wirra Recreation Park. There are 2 sites noted outside of current spatial boundary, Patch Id 9452 and 9500 (March 2001).
Objectives
Vegetation: To sample the vegetation of the range of vegetation associations systematically using a series of grids and to map using aerial photography the major associations.
Fauna: To sample vertebrate fauna at a series of sites within each vegetation association in a systematic and repeatable way.
Methodology
Vegetation: 25 x 25m grid sampling quantitatively with 20 "Patches" within the quadrat as measured intervals. All plants counted within each "Patch" and relative frequency for each species calculated. Forty-nine additional quadrats sampled with presence/absence data only.
Fauna: Traplines of 5-10 pitfall traps (depending on local conditions), 20 Elliott traps and 3 cage traps set for four days and night bird observations, one hour in vicinity of each trapline. Some spotlighting and opportune searching elsewhere in Park.
