Survey/Project Number: 418          Total No. of Sites: 9
Survey/Project Name: Sheoak size/class monitoring (Lincoln NP & Coffin Bay NP)
Abstract: Objective of this project is to determine whether the kangaroo management program in Coffin Bay National Park is reducing herbivore grazing (Kangaroo) impacts on the recovery of Sheoak Woodland. 7-10 permanent sites set up to monitor grazing impacts, the sites are monitored annually (survey start date 2004). Photopoints also taken, with the project being ongoing in 2019. BACKGROUND In efforts to restore a degraded area of Grassy Sheoak Woodland, Natural Resources EP land managers have attempted to reduce the total grazing pressure on the southern EP landscape. The program was initiated on the Coffin Bay Peninsula in 2001 and subsequently expanded into Lincoln National Park. The management history of the project area includes: - Removal of horses in 2004 - Closure of man-made waterholes shortly after to help reduce kangaroo numbers - Destruction of rabbit warrens in 2004 - Ongoing rabbit control through annual baiting and fumigation program - Ongoing management of Western Grey Kangaroos since 2001 Other biological data is available for this project as: - Spotlight counts - Dung counts - Cull data REFERENCE: Analysis of grazing impacts on Coffin Bay and Lincoln National Grassy Sheoak Woodland 2003 to 2018 Department for Environment and Water August 2018 DEW Technical note 2018/XX

Start Date: 01/01/2004      End Date: 01/01/2020
Survey Type: Vegetation Only

Study Area Description: *** No study area description recorded
Objectives
Vegetation: Each site has a centre reproductive female tree which is tagged and marked with GPS, the site extends to a radius of 20 m around the centre tree. Each Sheoak within the 20 m raduis is permanently tagged. For each tree; size class is measured (percent survivorship) and Browsing noticed Yes/No (percent browsed). Objective is to determine whether the kangaroo management program in Coffin Bay NP is reducing herbivore grazing (Kangaroo) impacts on the recovery of Sheoak Woodland.
Fauna: *** No fauna survey objectives recorded
Methodology
Vegetation: Monitor sites annually in Feb/March (Before rain and bridal creeper sprouts). Monitoring time = 3-4 days, data entry & prep 2-3 days. At each site collect following information: 1. Relocate all tagged sheoaks and record following attributes: o Sex of tree (Male/Female/Unknown) o Browsing Damage (y/n) o Class size (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9) See below for definition. o Circumference at Breast Height (CBH) for all sheoaks Class 3 and above. Measure CBH at 1.3 metres, unless tree forked at this height. Then measure below the fork or if that is too low, measure the leading trunk o Comments are useful. Eg. Dryness, Heavy Browsing, Location, issues 2. If a specimen cannot be relocated then record it as Class=8 (dead), browsing damage u=unknown, and make comment that it was not found. If it is relocated alive in future year then ensure that database is changed in the previous years where class was scored as dead (change class to 0 in previous years) 3. Any tags found loose are to be picked up and record Class = 8 (dead), browsing damage=u (unknown). Do not reuse these tags in future. 4. Tag any new seedlings found during visit. Use sheep tag with a new number and also wire marker for easy relocation. Update the mud map with its location. 5. Spend time looking for new recruits and try to increase the sample size for each site back to 40. 6. Ensure mother tree is flagged around trunk. 7. Site Photo from photo-point rod 8. Update mud map Size Classes 1. 0 - 0.2cm Seedling/juv 2. 0.2cm - 1.3 metres Juvenile 3. 1.3m - 3.0m old juvenile/no reproductive evident 4. >3.0 metres Young Mature 5. >3.0 metres Mature 6. >3.0 metres old Mature 7. >3.0 metres Senescent 8. Dead standing Include missing and loose tags 9. Dead fallen For large trees only
Fauna: *** No vertebrate methodology recorded
