Survey/Project Number: 52          Total No. of Sites: 89
Survey/Project Name: Fleurieu Peninsula Swamps / Mt. Lofty Ranges Southern Emu-Wren Biological Survey
Abstract: Mount Lofty Ranges Southern Emu-wren distribution and abundance survey. This biological survey, held between 1993 and 1994, was conducted in selected swamps within the Southern Mount Lofty Ranges area, near Adelaide, South Australia. Aim: Search sites across the Mount Lofty Ranges Southern Emu-wren's (MLRSEW) former range to establish a current distribution and abundance. Objectives: 1. To locate all remaining sub-populations of the MLR SEW. 2. To estimate the total number of MLR SEWs remaining on the Fleurieu Peninsula. 3. To carry out quantitative vegetation surveys of the Fleurieu Peninsula Swamps and collect other habitat data (such as density, size and extent of isolation, grazing and clearance). 4. To identify threats to the MLR SEW. 5. To carry out community awareness program on the MLR SEW and FLeurieu Peninsula Swamps. 6. To write a draft recovery plan for the MLR SEW, focussing on reccomendations for future research and management, and with particular reference to the management of swamp habitat. Reference (internal CCSA) Littlely & Cutten 1994, Appendix 1 - 1993 MLRSEW Survey, in the Draft Recovery Plan for the MLRSEW, Conservation SA. Methods 86 sites in total were searched, chosen on basis of their potential for MLRSEW. 84 swamps and 2 dry-heath sites were thoroughly searched across the MLR SEW's former range. Where MLR SEW were sighted, the time of sighting, weather conditions, numbers, sex, and behavioural details were recorded. SEW calls were also noted but generally not counted as sightings. This project also accommodates data from the Fleurieu Peninsula Swamps biological survey carried out in December 1996 - 12 sites surveyed for fauna. Reference: Littlely, T. (1998). Start Date: 01/01/1993      End Date: 10/12/1996
Survey Type: Vegetation and Fauna

Study Area Description: Selection of Southern Mount Lofty swamps. Three swamp types were identified: creekline/floodplain, peatbogs and wetland swamps that have been subjected to various management practices. Yundie is the northern most point and Cape Jervis is the southern most point. The area is bounded to the west by the coast of Fleurieu Peninsula / Yankalilla and the mouth of the Finniss in the east. Covers mapsheets: Cape Jervis, Torrens Vale, Encounter, Yankalilla, Willunga and Milang.
Objectives
Vegetation: Visit period 1/3/1993-31/3/1994: To determine the status of emu wren habitats. Compare swamps that have records of emu wrens present against sites without emu wrens present. 3. To carry out quantitative vegetation surveys of the Fleurieu Peninsula Swamps and collect other habitat data (such as density, size and extent of isolation, grazing and clearnance). Visit Period 1/12/1996-10/12/1996: Biological survey carried out on several swamps
Fauna: Visit period 1/3/1993-31/3/1994: Aim: Search sites across the Mount Lofty Ranges Southern Emu-wren's (MLRSEW) former range to establish a current distribution and abundance. Objectives: 1. To locate all remaining sub-populations of the MLR SEW. 2. To estimate the total number of MLR SEWs remaining on the Fleurieu Peninsula. Visit Period 1/12/1996-10/12/1996: Biological survey carried out on several swamps
Methodology
Vegetation: Complete species list per 10 x 10m quadrat using cover / abundance scores. Physical information was also recorded (landform elements, surface strew, soil, disturbance, vertebrate impacts). Overstorey heights and canopy cover were not recorded as not appropriate to vegetation structure. If 10 x 10m quadrat not appropriate then size readjusted to be 100m2 in total.
Fauna: *** No vertebrate methodology recorded

Data Distribution Rules: Public Dataset
