Survey/Project Number: 646          Total No. of Sites: 349
Survey/Project Name: Arid Threatened Flora
Abstract: The aim of this project is to fill critical knowledge gaps relating to some of the nationally and state listed threatened flora species as well as flora species where little information is known within the Arid Lands NRM region. The key to this project is through effective community engagement, education, involvement and tapping into the knowledge and observation opportunities that people living in the outback have regarding some of our little-known threatened flora species. Methods of data collection vary from targeted surveys or transect or observational surveys for some species, to opportunistic observations, as well as collation of recent and historical records and specimens from the public. Priority species include Olearia arckaringaensis, Goodenia chambersii, Goodenia lobata, Ptilotus barkeri, Ptilotus sp. arckaringa (undescribed), Ptilotus whitei. The project aims to collect new or updated location data, assess population size, distribution, ecological requirements and the relative presence and impacts of threatening processes.

Start Date: 01/01/1996      End Date: 01/01/2025
Survey Type: Vegetation Only

Study Area Description: Whole of SA Arid Lands NRM Region - North of Port Augusta to NT, QLD and NSW borders, but east of APY and MT Lands.
Objectives
Vegetation: Objectives for Stage One 2009: The objective of this project was to collect fresh location data and information for up to twelve threatened flora species (Table 1) in the SA Arid Lands NRM Board Region (SAAL NRM). This is to assist the development of interim management recommendations and a future review of conservation ratings of at least six priority species. To comply with funding constraints, timing of the project was limited to between March and June, 2009. The project was largely conducted via the coordination of targeted fieldwork and data collection, with some conceptual modelling. Develop a detailed work schedule to assist the coordination of field work, reporting and follow-up requirements, including gaining agreement on target species, methods, preferred contractors and locations;Ensure effective coordination and communication between relevant DEH and SAAL NRM staff, landholders and other stakeholders;Ensure appropriate data are collected, including the development of clear fieldwork requirements and minimum GIS datasets and datasheets;Initial conceptual ecological modelling for at least the priority species;Ensure appropriate permits for field work are obtained, subject to timely support from DEH;Engage, coordinate and assist contractors for field work/surveys - data collection and specimen collection;Facilitate the development or sourcing of appropriate technical information, including current location/GIS data and maps for contractors;Ensure data is provided for loading in DEH databases following field work;A final report to DEH, compiling all sub-contractor reports, including maps, photographs and summary of data collected.
Fauna: *** No fauna survey objectives recorded
Methodology
Vegetation: Attempt to verify the field locations of some historical records. Collect new or updated location data, including recruitment evidence, and habitat/threat information. Collect appropriate voucher specimens for State Herbarium. Collect leaf samples of Philotheca difformis, Goodenia chambersii and G. saccata for DNA analysis for purposes of taxonomic clarification, if applicable to the survey location (on behalf of a separate project). Targeted searches, transect surveys, opportunistic searching.
Fauna: *** No vertebrate methodology recorded
