Survey/Project Number: 655          Total No. of Sites: 36
Survey/Project Name: Painted Button-quail Surveys in the Mount Lofty Ranges
Abstract: The Painted Button-Quail survey was conducted by a specialist contractor from Queensland between 25 May and 9 June 2009. Surveys were primarily conducted in Para Wirra Recreation Park, Anstey Hill Conservation Park, Black Hill Conservation Park, Morialta Conservation Park, Horsnell Gully Conservation Park and Cleland Conservation Park with brief surveys also conducted in Sandy Creek Conservation Park, Onkaparinga Conservation Park and Cox Scrub Conservation Park. These sites were considered priorities based on past records and because they are the focus of prescribed burning efforts. Birds and platelets were searched for at sites throughout the priority parks. Sites were selected arbitrarily to cover (A) all major vegetation types and (B) a good representation of fire history for the area. Searches were conducted by simply walking through an area for between 20 minutes and 2 hours, depending on site suitability. The area searched varied between 2 ha and 30+ ha. Where the habitat was deemed completely unsuitable, surveys were briefer. All birds and platelets were noted.
