Survey/Project Number: 80          Total No. of Sites: 936
Survey/Project Name: Southern Eyre Peninsula
Abstract: This project aims to conduct a vegetation survey, between 1995 and 2003, to collect data on the remnant native vegetation communities, including independent fauna surveys, of Southern Eyre Peninsula, South Australia. METHODOLOGY: 1. FLORA: Classify and map the floristic composition and structure of the vegetation groups of the region. 2. FAUNA: Vertebrate surveys were done independently of the vegetation survey however, vertebrate sites were established at existing vegetation survey sites within Lincoln and Coffin Bay National Parks. Aim of the vertebrate sites was to monitor changes in vertebrate species at sites impacted by vertebrate pest control activities. Vertebrate survey visits were between 2000 and 2003.

Start Date: 09/10/1995      End Date: 01/05/2003
Survey Type: Vegetation and Fauna

Study Area Description: Topography is gently undulating with some resistant cores of quartzite forming small northerly trending ranges that rise abruptly from narrow coastal forelands. Rainfall varies from 350mm in the north to 500mm in the south. Uplands in the southern highlands carry vegetation communities dominated by Eucalyptus caldocalyx, E.odorata and E.leucoxylon, plains to the west support E.incrassata and Melaleuca uncinata. On the coastal fringe M.lanceolata can be found. Coffin Bay National Park encompasses bare and vegetated dunes and undulating calcarenite plains with Allocasuarina verticillata / Melaleuca lanceolata woodlands. Central mallee plains often have E.socialis / E.gracilis associations. Eyre Peninsula, south of 34* latitude and bounded by the coast. Study area does not include offshore islands. They are covered in the Offshore Islands survey no 20.
Objectives
Vegetation: To collect data on the remnant native vegetation communities of the Southern Eyre Peninsula such that we can classify and map the floristic composition and structure of the vegetation groups of the area.
Fauna: Vertebrate survey independent of vegetatuion except that vertebrate sites established at pre existing vegetation survey sites within Lincoln and Coffin Bay National Parks. Aim of the vertebrate survey sites was to monitor changes in vertebrate species at sites impacted by vertebrate pest control activities. Survey visits in November 2000, March 2001, Novenber 2001 and March 2003.
Methodology
Vegetation: Complete plant species lists in 30 x 30 m area were compiled, with Braun/Blanquet cover/abundance scored for each plant. More detailed methodology can be found in the Southern Eyre Peninsula Survey Manual. If the vegetation type occurred in a long linear space ie a road reserve, dune crest, an appropriate quadrat shape was chosen with an overall area of 900m2 ie 15 x 60 m or 10 x 90 m.
