BDBSA Project Metadata Detail

Survey/Project Number: 86          Total No. of Sites: 209
Survey/Project Name: Upper Mid North
Abstract: This project aims to conduct a biological survey to classify and map the floristic composition and structure of the vegetation groups of the Upper Mid North region, near Adelaide, South Australia, from 1995 to 1996. The survey links with the MIDNORTH survey (BDBSA Project 49) and the LOWER FLINDERS RANGES survey (BDBSA Project 89).

Start Date: 25/10/1995      End Date: 25/10/1996
Survey Type: Vegetation Only

Study Area Description: Occuring in the transition between the Flinders Ranges to the north and west and the semi arid vegetation of the undulating plains of the eastern pastoral region. Rainfall varies greatly from 282mm/yr in the north to 400mm/yr in the south of the study area and local variations due to orographic effects. Topography also varies greatly with ranges consisting of mainly northerly striking quartzite and sandstone ridges, intervening lower areas of flate to undulating plains or low ridges and hills on rocks such as siltstone shale and calcareous mudstone. Soils are dominated by shallow gravelly reddish loams on hills and ridges and moderately deep duplex soils on fans and footslopes. The plains are dominated by low open shrublands of Maireana and Atriplex, with Tussock Grasslands in the Pekina area. Tall Shrubland communities on hils and footslopes and Woodlands of Callitris and mallee on the hogback ridges. Pockets of Myoporum and Callitris Low Woodlands and Stipa Grasslands still occur in the study area, but in greatly reduced numbers. Ten 1:50 000 mapsheets south of latitude 32 degress and east of longitude 138 degress to latitude 33 degrees and longitude 139 degrees including Peterborough, Pekina, Orroroo, Willowie, Carrieton, Craddock, Yednalue, Willochra and Kanyaka townships.
Objectives
Vegetation: To classify and map the floristic composition and structure of the vegetation groups of the area. The survey links with the MIDNORTH survey (1992) and the LOWER FLINDERS RANGES (1977) survey.
         Fauna: N/A
Methodology
Vegetation: Complete list of plant species within a 30 X 30 metre quadrat using Braun and Blanquet cover abundance scores. In the pastoral saltbush/bluebush areas some quadrats were extended to 50 X 50 metre and some roadsides were adhusted to 10 X 90 metre.
Fauna: *** No vertebrate methodology recorded
