Survey/Project Name: Mt Lofty Ranges Southern Emu-wren records - cumulative. Census & misc. data
Abstract: This project aims to conduct research and implement management to ensure the recovery and long-term survival of the Southern Emu-wren (Mt Lofty Ranges ssp), near Adelaide, South Australia. This project accommodates data from a number of different Southern Emu-wren projects carried out since 1993 on the Fleurieu Peninsula. Some of these projects are ongoing. AIMS: 1. Banding and monitoring Emu-wren to learn about their population dynamics and ecology; 2. Investigate methods of swamp habitat management; 3. Study the genetic relationship between populations of Southern Emu-wren (Mt Lofty Ranges ssp) on the Fleurieu Peninsula, and also between the other subspecies; and Mallee Emuwren and Rufous-crowned Emuwren. NOTE: Most populations of the Emu-wren are on private property, however there are known populations in Deep Creek Conservation Park, and there are possibly further populations in other Fleurieu Peninsula reserves. Study Area Description: Second Valley Forest (Forestry SA land), Fleurieu Peninsula, SA The Second Valley Forests are Forestry SA land, occurring in the southern Fleurieu Peninsula. Other locations on private and public land on the Fleurieu Peninsula.
Objectives
         Vegetation: Vegetation data was recorded to inform habitat management for Fleurieu Swamps and MLR Southern Emu-wren.
         Fauna: The overall aims are to conduct research and implement management to ensure the recovery and long-term survival of the Mount Lofty Ranges Emu-wren.
Methodology
         Vegetation: For each wetland area (entire wetland), the following attributes were recorded: overstorey dominants and cover (up to 3 spp.), understorey dominants and cover (up to 5 species), emergents, vegetation structure, height classes of dominant overstorey, generaly vegetation condition rating, understorey condition rating, general notes on disturbance
         Fauna: Observations of Southern Emu-wren only were noted. Frequently call broadcasting was used; specific information on which visits was not available. METHODOLOGY [8/8/2006 extracted from permit]: Trapping: Emu-wrens will be trapped in small-mesh (25 mm) mist nets. Mist nets will be used for trapping in daylight hours only and will not be used during hot, cold, wet or windy weather. Mist nets will be checked at least every 15-20 minutes. Banding: Colour-bands (size 1, unsealed) and numbered metal leg-bands (Australian Bird and Bat Banding Scheme, size 1) may be fitted and standard morphometric parameters may be recorded (e.g. body mass, wing length, head and bill length). Holding: Birds will be held temporarily (< 1 hour) in hygienically maintained, calico bags or purpose-built wooden boxes during processing. When not being opened for access to birds, these will be placed in safe and secure areas (i.e. protected from predators in areas not exposed to excessive heat, cold or wet, and where they will not be crushed by personnel). Genetic sampling: Birds from which genetic samples are required will have 2-4 fully developed secondary flight feathers plucked (1-2 from each wing). Release: Birds will be released near the point of capture. Individuals trapped as a group will be released as a group. Monitoring: Emu-wrens will be monitored at selected sites using conventional area-search and transect survey methods. Call luring (using a pre-recorded territorial call played using a small portable player and speaker device) may be employed to facilitate capture and/or monitoring.
