Survey/Project Name: | GAB SPRINGS BASELINE SURVEY -WMC 1995 to 1999 |
Abstract: | Great Artesian Basin springs baseline survey carried out by Western Mining Corporation during 1995 to 1996 in the Far North region of South Australia. 1432 locations were surveyed, with sites varying from one square meter to 30 ha. In most cases the survey site was an individual spring vent, but in some casees the wetlands from two or more vents coalesce and were surveyed as a single unit. Flora, invertebrates and fish were surveyed at each site, as well as water chemistry and flow parameters. Invertebrates and fish were recorded as present or absent. The cover of each plant species was also recorded. Several field observers were involved, primarily Darren Niejalke. For this project, the field observer has been entered as Western Mining Corporation employees. |

Vegetation: | Vegetated wetland area estimated in the field by pacing out the dimensions of polygons that represented the approximate extent of wetland dependant vegetation. Cover dominance of flora species followed Fatchen and Fatchen; 0=nil,X=isolated, 1=<5%, 2=5-25%, 3=25-50%, 4=50-75%, 5=75-100%; sum of min score is <100% and sum of max score is >100%. For data entry into the BDBSA, X codes were entered as T. Total vegetation cover has NOT been entered. Database codes include values from 0 - 6 but this does not equate with the above categories. Flow Scores: 0=No Spring Found, 1=Inactive (no wetland veg), 2=Damp (has wetland veg), 3=Saturate (veg pres+ makes squelch noise under foot), 4=Freewater (pres of surface water), 5= freewater + tail (obvious moving water along a tail) Stock Grazing Impact Scores following Fatchen and Fatchen; 1=Nil, 2=Lightly grazed, 3=Lightly grazed and pugged, 4=Grazed and pugged, 5=Heavily grazed and pugged | ||
