BDBSA Project Metadata Detail

Survey/Project Number: 1008          Total No. of Sites: 0
Survey/Project Name: FrogWatch SA (started 2015)
Abstract: This project replaces a previous citizen-science Frog Atlas program initiated by Zoos SA across South Australia, in 2008 to fill the gap left by the EPA's Frog Census program which ceased in 2003. This data is currently available via Atlas of Living Australia at https://collections.ala.org.au/public/showDataResource/dr10043 OBJECTIVES: A new mobile phone application with a web-based interface is being developed to capture survey data, and to provide user-access to SA frog-sighting data and information about SA's frog species, to enable them to identify frogs in sites of interest. This will be an on-going program, linked to NRM regional websites. Historical data from BDBSA and from the Zoos SA 2008-09 Frog Atlas will be captured into the SA Frog Atlas 2015 app for users to look at trends over time.

Start Date: 01/06/2015      End Date: 01/01/2025
Survey Type: Fauna only

Study Area Description: South Australia
Objectives
Vegetation: *** No vegetation survey objectives recorded
         Fauna: Refer to Abstract.
Methodology
Vegetation: *** No vegetation methodology recorded
Fauna: The frog census has been based on the identification of frog species through recordings of calls during the breeding season. The use of recordings provides opportunity for public (citizen scientists) involvement without the need for experience in frog identification. Citizen scientists visit locations where frogs are likely to congregate and, after sitting quietly at a site for 5 minutes, record their calls (5 minute recording at each site as a standard) as well as information about the frog habitat and general environmental conditions, which are returned for analysis. Frog experts listen to the recordings to identify the frog species present and enter them into the Frog Atlas database.
