Survey/Project Name: Reintroduction of Mid-sized Mammals to the Flinders Ranges -BOUNCEBACK
Abstract: The Bounceback program aims to reintroduce mid-sized mammals to the Flinders Ranges, South Australia. The Western Quoll (Dasyurus geoffroii - Idnya), a nationally-threatened species, was last observed in the Flinders Ranges during the 1880s, and is now only found in the south-west of Western Australia. Whereas, the Brushtail Possum (Trichosurus vulpecula - Virlda) was last recorded in Wilpena Pound, SA, in the 1950s and can no longer be found north of Hawker. METHODOLGY: The proposed reintroduction will involve `wild-to-wild' translocation: 1. Western Quolls coming from Western Australia 2. Brush-tailed Possums translocated from the nearest, existing wild population. The `Re-Introduction Project of the Western Quoll and Brush-tailed Possum' is being undertaken in four stages: Phase 1 - Pre-release assessment and project planning (March 2013-14) Phase 2 - Trial re-introduction (March 2014-15) Phase 3 - Full re-introduction (March 2015-17) Phase 4 - Maintenance and monitoring (March 2017-18) Detailed methods for the project are contained in two translocation plans. Several Honours and PhD projects relate to these introductions. REFERENCES: Moseby, K.E. and Peacock, D. (2013). Study Area Description: Flinders Ranges National Park and surrounding properties. No boundary as released fauna populations are expected to grow and disperse.
Objectives
Vegetation: Project aims are to reintroduce regionally extinct mammal species into former habitat. Research aims are to document successful/unsuccessful reintroductions and determine factors affecting success. Ecological elements investigated include: predators, herbivores, selected plant species that characterise habitat and physical habitat characteristics, including features that provied shelters and den/nest sites for reintroduced species
Fauna: Project aims are to reintroduce regionally extinct mammal species into former habitat and document locations where target species (Western Quoll and Brushtail Possum) were released and dispersed to. Research aims are to document successful/unsuccessful reintroductions and determine factors affecting success. Ecological elements investigated include: predators and competing herbivores.
Methodology
