Survey/Project Name: Annual Survey of one Forestry SA Native Forest Reserve - Urrbrae TAFE
Abstract: This project aims to conduct an annual flora and fauna survey of one Forestry SA Native Forest Reserve, as identified by Forestry SA, across southern South Australia. Each year will likely be a different reserve. BACKGROUND: Forestry SA's primary management objective for areas of native forest is to conserve and enhance native flora and fauna and preserve biodiversity for the long-term benefit of the South Australian community. One key component of this objective is improving their knowledge of the ecosystems they manage through biological surveying. There has been recent interest from Forestry SA to investigate and verify recent sightings and activity of Southern Brown Bandicoot [South Australia mainland and Kangaroo Island ssp] (Isoodon obesulus obesulus) in Forestry SA reserves. Students of TAFE SA Urrbrae Campus have been invited to carry out biological survey work to assist Forestry SA in helping to verify confirmed and unconfirmed sightings of bandicoots to help meet its management objectives. Forestry SA have requested an extended species survey to include other fauna groups, as well as floristic survey work. The annual survey will also help to achieve the educational outcomes of training in biological survey work as part of the Diploma in Conservation and Land Management.

Start Date: 30/10/2017      End Date: 15/12/2020
Survey Type: Vegetation and Fauna

Study Area Description: Forestry SA Native Forest Reserves, usually in the Mt Lofty Ranges, but maybe in the South-East of SA in future years. 2017 survey conducted in Boat Harbour NFR, Second Valley Forest, adjacent Deep Creek CP.
Objectives
         Vegetation: Refer to Abstract.
         Fauna: Refer to Abstract.
Methodology
Vegetation: Survey work will follow the techniques described in the Biological Survey of SA for both vertebrates and flora. The principal objective is to develop a species list for the Native Forest Reserve. Plant voucher specimens will be collected for pressing and preparation of a herbarium which will be presented to the State Herbarium of SA. Rare or endangered plants (if recorded) will not be vouchered. Photographs will be taken instead.
Fauna: Survey work will follow the techniques described in the Biological Survey of SA for both vertebrates and flora. The principal objective is to develop a species list for the Native Forest Reserve. However, additional Elliot and cage traps will be used to increase the trapping effort and therefore species records. Small mammal, amphibian and reptile species, as trapped - catch, weigh, measure, release. The SA Museum will be contacted prior to the survey to discuss vouchering, if required. Observe and record bird and large mammal and reptile species sighted. Record bat calls using an Anabat device. Photograph animals caught on motion sensor trail cameras.
