Survey/Project Name: Revegetation Monitoring Studies on AC Robinson Properties at Upper Sturt and KI
Abstract: This project aims to hold biological data associated with Dr Anthony Robinson's revegetation projects at Upper Sturt (Mount Lofty Region), near Adelaide, and adjacent to Flinders Chase Conservation Park (Kangaroo Island), South Australia. The Upper Sturt component of this project was completed, with the last quadrat sampling in November 2016. The data was analysed and published in a series of papers in the South Australian Naturalist: Robinson, AC & Haska, JF 2018. `The Natural History of Upper Sturt, South Australia. Part 1: Vegetation History, Flora and Macrofungi of a Messmate Stringybark (Eucalyptus obliqua) Forest.' South Australian Naturalist 92(2): 80-101. Robinson, AC & Haska, JF 2019a. `The Natural History of Upper Sturt, South Australia Part 2: Vertebrates and Invertebrates of a Messmate Stringybark (Eucalyptus obliqua) Forest.' South Australian Naturalist 93(1): 16-41. Robinson, AC & Haska, JF 2019b. `The Natural History of Upper Sturt, South Australia Part 3: Recolonisation of a Revegetated Area after 16 years.' South Australian Naturalist 93(1): 42-61. On Kangaroo Island quadrat sampling also ended in November 2016 and the analysis results were again published in the South Australian Naturalist: Robinson, A.C. and Haska, J.F. (2020a). The Natural History of Wiluwilya and Wilderness Valley, Western Kangaroo Island, South Australia. Part 1: Vegetation History, Flora and Macrofungi of an area of Forest and Mallee. Part 3: Recolonisation of a Revegetated Area after 12 Years. 94 (2), 117-148. Robinson, A.C., Haska, J.F., Hodgens, P. and Groffen, H. (2020). The Natural History of Wiluwilya and Wilderness Valley, Western Kangaroo Island, South Australia. Part 2: Vertebrates and Invertebrates of an area of Forest and Mallee. South Australian Naturalist 94 (2). 77-106. On Saturday 3 January 2020, the `Wiluwilya' and `Wilderness Valley ` properties where this project had been carried out were burnt by an intense and uncontrollable wild fire which formed part of the `Black Summer' of Australian wildfires. It was decided to revive the original project and follow the recovery of the vegetation at the original 7 quadrats with the addition of an eighth quadrat to cover the valley of the North West River which has its headwaters in this area. See the following paper for more details of this fire: Robinson, A.C. (2020). The 2019 to 2020 Fire Season in Australia: A Kangaroo Island Perspective. South Australian Naturalist 94 (1), 3-37. There was virtually no vegetation recovery in the year following the fire so only the photopoints were repeated through that year. The first quadrat sampling was carried out in November 2021.
