BDBSA Project Metadata Detail

Survey/Project Number: 19          Total No. of Sites: 31
Survey/Project Name: Strzelecki
Abstract: This project aims to carry out a general biological survey in an area with very little information previously available, and to try and begin the preparation of a vegetation map for parts of the Strzelecki Desert, north-east South Australia. The project, concentrating on the Callabonna 1:250,000 mapsheet, is part of the Biological Survey of SA programme run by the Biological Survey and Monitoring group in Department for Environment and Heritage (DEH). Survey areas defined in a DEH spatial layer are managed by DEH Environmental Information Group. Visit period 13 SEP 1990 to 25 SEP 1990: Vegetation and Vertebrate survey; Visit period 1 AUG 1990 to 12 SEP 1990: Photopoints only. NOTE: Survey Site coordinates were reviewed in 2017-2018 to address suspected uncertainty in locational accuracy. Site was projected against Google Earth imagery and compared with physical and vegetation site data. Original site survey sheets including mud maps were consulted where available. In 2019 locations were either verified or moved the minimum distance required to improve data consistency. All changes were documented within the site audit data.

Start Date: 01/08/1990      End Date: 25/09/1990
Survey Type: Vegetation and Fauna

Study Area Description: A general site based vegetation survey over a large proportion of the Strzelecki 1:250,000 mapsheet, followed by an ANZSES vegetation and vertebrate survey at sites south of Lake Blanche and the area surrounding Montecollina Bore. All sites confined to the western half of the Callabonna 1:250,000 mapsheet
Objectives
Vegetation: To carry out a general biological survey in an area with very little information previously available. To try and begin the preparation of a vegetation map for parts of the Strzelecki Desert (concentrating on the Callabonna 1:250000 mapsheet). Photographs at 1:100,000 were used as a base for mapping. Visit Period 1/8/1990-12/9/1990: Misc photos taken but no data collected at site.
Fauna: *** No fauna survey objectives recorded
Methodology
Vegetation: Quadrats were 1 x 1km sampling within each patch, producing a complete species list with percent occurrence for each species recorded.
Fauna: Standard Biological Survey of SA methods.
