Survey/Project Name: | Onkaparinga Wetland Restoration and Revegetation |
Abstract: | Since 1992, wetlands have been constructed and degraded areas revegetated in the estuary, swamp and adjoining parts of Onkaparinga Estuary. Native flora was planted in five wetlands, each receiving stormwater from adjoining urban subdivisions. Non-riparian lands, which were previously grazed, were extensively revegetated from 1998 onwards. In order to protect regrowing vegetation, a goat eradication program is underway. Establishing a monitoring program would reveal which plant species have survived, identifying likely requirements for successful regeneration of various native species. Details of the actual planting specifications (plant species, locations, times etc) are available. Revegetation, species and areas to replant, closely follow original specifications. Goat control involves shooting over three days, twice a year, and recording the numbers shot. |

Objectives | |||
Vegetation: | Work grew out of project over 1992 to 1997 aimed at establishing wetlands in the park to reduce pollution from stormwater entering the park, to reduce water pollution and protect the estuary and nearby Port Noarlunga Reef. Onkaparinga Catchment Board sponsored production of report in 1992, recommending where and how wetlands were to be constructed and the recommended plant species. Water quality is monitored by the Onkaparinga Catchment Board. | ||
