Survey/Project Name: Kaiser Stuhl Conservation Park Riparian Review (Working Group Proposal)
Abstract: Following Yalumba's construction of major dams upstream of Kaiser Stuhl Conservation Park on Tanunda Creek in the early 1990's, concern was expressed over environmental issues of local riparian health and observed degradation resulting from changes in stream flow patterns. A working group recommended various actions involving monitoring of stream vegetation, water quality, sediment movement and aquatic biota. These separate monitoring actions, using a variety of monitoring methods are linked to other programs, all combined to provide an indication picture of the state of riparian ecosystems.

Start Date: 01/01/1996      End Date: 01/01/2006
Survey Type: Vegetation Only

Study Area Description: *** No study area description recorded
Objectives
Vegetation: Monitoring actions focus on various aspects of riparian systems. Vegetation monitoring includes evaluating impact of reduced water flow on Villarsia umbricola. Photopoints and transects have been established to identify changes in aquatic and semi-aquatic vegetation. The status of aquatic biota (macro-invertebrates and algae) is to be identified. Grazing impact and seedling regeneration data collected in the separate Kangaroo and Vegetation Survey and frog surveys undertaken for the annual Frog Census will add to data gathered. Water quality parameters measured along four creeks include pH, nitrate and phosphate content and turbidity. Patterns of sediment movement and movement in and out of pools is to be identified. The possibility of adjoining land and roads being silt sources will be determined by use of straw bale silt traps, maintained until the road is sealed. Soil types along the creeks are to be described.
