Impacts of past and present land use such as market gardens, orchard development, grazing and rubbish dumping remain along Fifth Creek. These activities have resulted in widespread pest plant invasion and loss of species diversity. Much of the upper storey of the area remains intact with Eucalyptus viminalis, Eucalyptus leucoxylon and Eucalyptus goniocalyx association close to the study site and Eucalyptus obliqua dominant north of the creekline. NPWSA is committed to the rehabilitation of land within reserve boundaries with catchment areas being areas of high priority. Rehabilitation involves mainly the destruction and removal of exotic plant species, particularly blackberry, tree lucerne, willows, hawthorn and bamboo. A five year threat abatement program has been established and will be monitored to gauge impact. Rehabilitation activities consistent with an Action Plan designed for Fifth Creek. |
