Survey/Project Name: Feral and Native Fauna Monitoring in Witjira NP and Simpson Desert CP
Abstract: During June 2001 aerial transects of the Witjira National Park and Simpson Desert Conservation Park were flown to determine feral animal abundance/distribution and to establish a methodology and logistical requirements for future surveys contributing toward management of feral herbivores within the reserved areas. Various eradication programs have been concentrated within the Simpson Desert region by NPWSA and through local soil boards but populations have never been verified to determine success rates. As an adjunct to the survey, opportunistic sightings of native fauna were also recorded. Transects were flown over both parks in November 2001 using recognised counting procedures with experienced operators. Culling operations of feral herbivores were subsequently conducted both within the reserved areas and adjacent pastoral leases.
