Survey/Project Name: Fuel Hazard Assessment
Abstract: This is a statewide project that aims to establish the fire fuel hazards for different vegetation types, and create a spatial database that will indicate the risks of different areas, and develop ideas and understanding about fuel hazards. This project is associated with the "Plant Fire Response Monitoring" project, and the same burn may be used to collect data for both projects. There is no particulatar regime for the project - when there is a burn planned, a site is created. This is usually on reserve, however may sometimes be off reserve. Prior to the burn a standard "Fuel Hazard Assessment Data Sheet" is used to record the attributes for each site. This includes - the dominant species for a site, including the 3 dominant trees and the understorey, (a full plant list is not taken). - site location details and GPS location. - year of last known fire. - litter bed depth, surface fine fuel, elevated fuel hazard, bark hazard. During and following the fire, the Fuel Hazard is determined via the methods outlined in the Fuel Hazard Guide Handbook. This includes the rates of regrowth for different vegetation types. In addition to data collected for intended burns, information is also recorded following accidental fires, or areas with a fire history. Assessments will continue to be made through time.

Objectives
         Vegetation: There is no particulatar regime for the project - when there is a burn planned, a site is created. This is usually on reserve, however may sometimes be off reserve. Prior to the burn a standard "Fuel Hazard Assessment Data Sheet" is used to record the attributes for each site. This includes - the dominant species for a site, including the 3 dominant trees and the understorey, (a full plant list is not taken). - site location details and GPS location. - year of last known fire. - litter bed depth, surface fine fuel, elevated fuel hazard, bark hazard. - photographs are also taken for each site, (some the photopoints are permanently marked, others are just of a vegetation type and others are opportunistic) These hazard ratings are assessed using the handbook "Overall Fuel Hazard Guide". Copies of the current handbook and the data sheet, are located in Biological Survey and Monitoring with Andrew Graham. Copies and future updated copies are available from the Fire Management Section. During and following the fire, the Fuel Hazard is determined via the methods outlined in the Fuel Hazard Guide Handbook. This includes the rates of regrowth for different vegetation types.
