Survey/Project Name: Cathedral Rocks -EP Southern Emu Wren and Western Whipbird Monitoring
Abstract: This project involves the monitoring of two threatened species, Eyre Peninsula Southern Emu wren and the Western Whipbird, at the Cathedral Rocks Wind Farm Heritage Agreement site. It involved an assessment of the status and distribution of Eyre Peninsula Southern Emu Wren at the proposed wind farm site prior to constructin, as well as monitoring following construction. Western Whipbirds were found at the site and are now also part of the monitoring. Both species have been monitored at 20 sites throughout the Cathedral Rocks Wind Farm since Spring 2004 (Pickett 2004 and 2005). Eyre Peninsula Southern Emu Wrens have been recorded at 13 of 20 sites throughout the windfarm. Approximately 20 individuals were recorded in 2004 (Pickett 2004) and 13 in 2005, including two pairs and a female that was flushed from a nest (Pickett 2005). A population estimate for the Western Whipbird at the site is estimated at around 20 individuals. Monitoring will continue for five years after which a review of the program is planned.
