Survey/Project Name: RIVER TORRENS BIRD TRANSECTS (1975-2007) Bob Whatmough
Abstract: A quarterly bird count survey has been conducted along the urban section of the Torrens River since March 1975. This area was divided into three divisions namely: Upstream from Athelstone to Stepney; Downstream from Thebarton to West Beach; and Outlet from West Beach to Sea. Quarterly bird counts for each of the 3 transects have been conducted from March 1975 to 2008. Counts were conducted by walking all 3 transects over a two day period. The time of day varied from visit to visit, most visits being made in the afternoon and not at the most favourable times for detecting birds. For all species sighted (or positively identified from calls) along the reach of river the minimum number of individuals was estimated and recorded along with any other information considered worthy of note.
