Survey/Project Number: 712          Total No. of Sites: 598
Survey/Project Name: EP Shorebirds 2020 (+ all coastal aves)
Abstract: Over the last 30 years plus counts of migratory and resident shorebirds have been conducted on Eyre Peninsula. These counts have highlighted the importance of the region for shorebirds, identifying several areas that support internationally significant numbers of shorebirds. Some sites have not been counted since 1983 or 2000. Other site data span 28 years. The national project, which is managed by Birds Australia in collaboration with WWF-Australia has been established in response to a growing concern over declining shorebird populations in Australia and the need to reliably determine population trends for species. Shorebirds are considered good indicators of wetland health and therefore provide a useful tool to assess the condition of wetlands. 14 key Shorebird Areas involving 36 specific Count Areas, which are part of a National Shorebird Network of 150 sites, are surveyed at least twice a year; summer & winter. Some sites which have been surveyed since 1979 are also counted in autumn and spring. Each Shorebird Area has been selected using criteria designated by the Birds Australia Shorebirds 2020 Project Team. Objectives: 1.Monitor the population status of migratory and resident shorebirds at 14 Shorebird Areas across on Eyre Peninsula 2.Regularly monitor assess the suitability of shorebird habitats at these sites 3. Assess the relative importance of these sites to the migratory and resident shorebird populations on Eyre Peninsula. The Eyre Peninsula 2020 project extends around 1800km of coastline and encompasses representative areas of low energy embayments with extensive intertidal sandflats, mangrove woodland with intertidal creeks and saltmarshes, high energy sandy ocean beaches backed by dunefields and saline lake systems and rocky reefs and headlands. Records for this Shorebirds project are now available via the BIRDLIFE AUSTRALIA SHOREBIRDS 2020 data extract stored under BDBSA project 1234. This EP Shorebirds project 712 seems to hold additional records to that stored under BIRDLIFE AUSTRALIA SHOREBIRDS project.

The project proposes to sample such an extensive array of coastal ecoysytems over 15 years that it was imperative to collect all data relating coastal birds. The focus remains on the shorebirds but data collection methods include counting waterbirds(geese, swans, ducks, grebes, pelicans, herons & allies, gannets, cormorants), seabirds (gulls and terns), raptors and coastal bush birds.
