Survey/Project Name: Bimbowrie CP Landscape Restoration Program
Abstract: In the late 1800s Pepper-trees (Schinus areira) and Athel Pines (Tamarix aphylla) were planted around the Bimbowrie homestead and quickly spread along the Bimbowrie Creek and its tributary drainage systems. Bimbowrie Creek system is dominated by River Red Gums Eucalyptus camaldulensis which is listed as a threatened community. Much of this creek system is infested with Pepper-trees and Boxthorns and other environmental weeds. This is considered to be one of the most significant environmental management problems in the Bimbowrie Conservation Park. The Department Department for Environment and Heritage, in partnership with the Department of Correctional Services established the Mobile Outback Work Camp (MOWCamp) program in 2005. Low security prisoners from Pt Augusta Prison are undertaking a range of works on Parks and Reserves in SA including pest plant control. Bimbowrie Conservation Park Landscape Restoration Program initial focus is Pepper-tree and Boxthorn control along the Bimbowrie Creek headwaters and homestead area. MOWCamp is assisting DEH staff in weed eradication, follow-up control of regrowth and revegetation following removal of pest plants.
