Survey/Project Number: 87          Total No. of Sites: 54
Survey/Project Name: Northern Spencer Gulf
Abstract: This project aims to conduct a biological survey to collect data on the vegetation communities of the Northern Spencer Gulf region, near Adelaide, South Australia, to enable the classification and mapping of the floristic composition and structure of the vegetation groups of the area.

Start Date: 14/10/1996      End Date: 18/10/1997
Survey Type: Vegetation Only

Study Area Description: The survey region runs from just north of Port Germein in the south to north of the Dutchmans Stern CP in the Southern Flinders Ranges and encompasses the area from the coast to the ranges. Average annual rainfall ranges from around 250mm in the coastal region up to around 400mm in the ranges. There are some mangrove and salmarsh communities along the coastal fringe grading into saltbush and mallee country further inland. Vegetation on the ranges includes some forest and woodland areas of Sugar Gum and Blue Gum and mallee communities of Peppermint Box and Beaked Red Mallee as well as Acacia shrublands and Triodia grasslands. The survey region runs from just north of Port Germein in the south to north of the Dutchmans Stern CP in the Southern Flinders Ranges and encompasses the area from the coast to the ranges. It covers the 1:50,000 mapsheets of Port Augusta, Davenport and Mambray.
Objectives
Vegetation: The main aim of this survey was to collect data on the vegetation communities of the region to enable the classification & mapping of the floristic composition and structure of the vegetation groups of the area. This survey links with the Midnorth Survey (1992), the Upper Mid North survey (1996) and the North Eastern Eyre Peninsula survey (1998).
Fauna: *** No fauna survey objectives recorded
Methodology
Vegetation: Complete list of plant species within a 30 X 30 metre quadrat using Braun/ Blanquet cover abundance scores. Quadrat size was extended to 50 X 50m in some of drier saltbush/bluebush areas and in other areas if the vegetation type occured along a linear feature, such as a creekline, the quadrat size may have been altered to 10 X 90m.
Fauna: *** No vertebrate methodology recorded
