Survey/Project Name: Reef Life Survey
Abstract: Reef Life Survey (RLS) is a marine-life monitoring programme, based in Hobart, Tasmania, that aims to improve biodiversity conservation and the sustainable management of marine resources by coordinating surveys of rocky and coral reefs using scientific methods, with the ultimate goal to improve coastal stewardship. RLS was developed, and is now managed, by University of Tasmania. RLS has established the first global-baseline of marine biodiversity using consistent methods, which includes abundance data for over 3500 marine species at more than 2000 sites in 40 countries. This programme is carried out by experienced recreational SCUBA divers, in partnership with management agencies and university researchers. The data from these surveys are available through the Atlas of Living Australia or can be viewed through the Australian Ocean Data Network.

Start Date: 01/01/2008      End Date: 01/01/2020
Survey Type: Other

Study Area Description: Fleurieu Peninsula, Kangaroo Island, Yorke Peninsula and Sceale Bay
Objectives
Vegetation: *** No vegetation survey objectives recorded
Fauna: *** No fauna survey objectives recorded
Methodology
Vegetation: *** No vegetation methodology recorded
Fauna: There are three different methods used to conduct the surveys; METHOD 1: Fishes are surveyed in two 5 m wide by 5m high bands or ('blocks'), parallel with the 50 m transect line. METHOD 2: Invertebrates and cryptic fishes are surveyed in two 1 m wide by 2 m high bands (or 'blocks') on either side of the transect line. PQs: Digital photo-quadrates are taken at 2.5 m intervals along the transect line (i.e. 20 per 50 m transect).
