Abstract: |
The aim of this project is to develop a comprehensive understanding of species (flora and fauna) present, and their distribution, within the Onkaparinga River adjacent Clarendon Recreation Park, and to have sufficient information available to inform planning and implementation of an environmentally sensitive weed control program for this site.
This project will target, by removal or reduction of, barriers and threats to aquatic biota, with the aim of maximising the ecological benefits of returning environmental flows to the Onkaparinga, Torrens and South Para Rivers, Adelaide region, South Australia.
The Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges NRM Board (the Board) is in the initial stages of planning for a program of works to complement the environmental flows trial in the Western Mount Lofty Ranges.
As part of this program the Board is interested in undertaking clearance and control of environmental weeds along the length of the Onkaparinga River adjacent Clarendon Recreation Park. The idea of environmental weed clearance and control at this location has come about as a result of prioritising the outcomes of a river survey in which all barriers and threats were mapped and rated. This site has been prioritised as a high priority for action because the significant growth of environmental weeds is threatening aquatic health and because the density of these environmental weeds is also likely to be a barrier to the movement of aquatic biota.
The Board believes that there exists an opportunity to provide great environmental and social rewards through the treatment of this site at Clarendon. However because of the site's importance to the community, and because any work should be done in a sensitive manner so as to enhance the benefits of reintroducing environmental flows, the Board is undertaking a rigorous planning process before commencing any onground works.
