Survey/Project Number: 1067          Total No. of Sites: 78
Survey/Project Name: Alexandrina Council Threatened Acacias
Abstract: This project aims to survey three threatened Acacia species: Acacia pinguifolia, Acacia rhetinocarpa and Acacia dodonaeifolia south of Adelaide, South Australia. The survey was conducted under the Alexandrina Council Threatened Species Protection Project, jointly funded by the Threatened Species Network, Alexandrina Council and the Threatened Plant Action Group. The sites were surveyed in 1999, and once a year in 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003. Most plantings were done in 1999. The project's outcomes included: 1. Eleven naturally-occurring populations and 17 planted-populations of A. pinguifolia were surveyed. Four naturally occurring and eight planted populations of A. rhetinocarpa were surveyed; 32 naturally occurring populations of A. dodonaeifolia were surveyed (inclduing 5 sites where planted individuals were also surveyed); 2. Establishment of monitoring sites including five monitoring photopoints; 3. Weed control; 4. Seed collection and propagation. The project outcomes are documented in the hardcopy report: Pickett, M and Mallen, N (2001) Alexandrina Council Threatened Species Protection Project. Data is held in an MS Access database, held at the Strathalbyn Natural Resource Centre, Strathalbyn and a copy held by DEW. Distribution of the three species within the project area was obtained from: Plant Population database; BDBSA records; State Herbarium of SA records. In addition, to surveying known populations, new populations were also surveyed. Specimens from each survey location were lodged at the State Herbarium and records are in the ADHerb database. Details of populations known prior to the survey were entered into Plant Population database.

Start Date: 01/01/1990      End Date: 31/12/2003

Study Area Description: District Council of Alexandrina. Known populations of Acacia rhetinocarpa, A pinguifolia and A dodonaefolia within Council area were documented, on roadsides and private land.
Objectives
Vegetation: To survey and protect populations of three threatened Acacias: Acacia rhetinocarpa, Acacia pinguifolia and Acacia dodonaefolia, in the District Council of Alexandrina. Populations of all three species were also planted and survival rates monitored.
Fauna: *** No fauna survey objectives recorded
Methodology
Vegetation: Threatened Plant Species Population Database datasheets were completed for Acacia pinguifolia and Acacia rhetinocarpa populations. 5 photopoints established.
Fauna: *** No vertebrate methodology recorded

Data Distribution Rules: Public Dataset
Project Basis: Vegetation : Presence and absence method
Vegetation : Monitoring - Vegetation/Ecosystem (ie species records - usually re-visited for ongoing monitoring) NOTE:NON Std Svy methodology may have been used.
