BDBSA Project Metadata Detail

Survey/Project Number: 1080          Total No. of Sites: 421
Survey/Project Name: Friends of Sturt Gorge -Plants of Conservation Significance and animal sightings
Abstract: The project will involve the collection of GPS points and attribute information for plants of conservation significance, or local significance, in the Sturt Gorge Recreation Park, near Adelaide, South Australia. The data gathered will provide a baseline against which the Friends of Sturt Gorge can evaluate the effects of their ongoing bushcare efforts and methods on plants of conservation significance, and on the population and distribution of indigenous animals and birds. The addition of the data collected to the Biological Databases of SA will make the data more widely available, contributing to park management, and to any related research conducted at a later date, and to the ongoing protection of plants of conservation significance and the birds and animals within the Sturt Gorge.

Start Date: 01/08/2009      End Date: 01/01/2020
Survey Type: Vegetation and Fauna

Study Area Description: Sturt Gorge Recreation Park
Objectives
         Vegetation: Refer to Abstract.
         Fauna: Refer to Abstract.
Methodology
Vegetation: Field workers will use a mobile app (linked to the Friends of Sturt Gorge GIS web map) to collect GPS data and attributes for plants and GPS data for animals and birds observed on site. As well as electronically recording the relevant GPS coordinates and attribute information, digital photographs may also be taken. Plant voucher specimens, one of each species at each location, will be collected for the State Herbarium wherever the Census of SA Plants indicates that no such specimen has been previously collected from Sturt Gorge, or where the location is significantly different from that of existing specimens in the Herbarium, or where the plant shows significant botanical differences, or if the identification is uncertain. Data collected about birds and animals will be from observation and use of GPS; no netting or trapping will be done.
