BDBSA Project Metadata Detail

Survey/Project Number: 1147          Total No. of Sites: 680
Survey/Project Name: BioBlitz events - Discovery Circle
Abstract: This project aims to observe and record species in BioBlitz surveys, led by specialists who take members of the public along to help. BioBlitz events run for a short period of time (e.g. one day) in a park or similar location. At a BioBlitz event, scientists and naturalists conduct biological surveys to record the living species present at the site. By participating, members of the public learn about science and biodiversity. All observations are validated by the specialists. Start Date: 22/08/2014      End Date: 30/12/2020
Survey Type: Vegetation and Fauna

Study Area Description: Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges Region
Objectives
         Vegetation: Refer to Abstract.
         Fauna: Refer to Abstract.
Methodology
Vegetation: Most BioBlitz surveys are observational.
Fauna: Most BioBlitz surveys are observational. At Oaklands Wetland and Reserve (29/08/2014) 'Anabat' echolocation detection device used ? a sonogram is attached as image file. Two surveys were conducted. 43 usable calls (excluding noise) were recorded from 7.13 p.m. to 7.38 p.m. giving an average of 1.7 calls per minute. 45 calls were recorded from 8.17 p.m. to 8.38 p.m. giving an average of 2.1 calls per minute. Many of the recorded calls involved more than one bat species ? sometimes up to three ? so the number of actual calls per minute is under-estimated. Calls on this night were dominated by the Southern Forest Bat (>50%), followed by the Large Forest Bat and the Southern Free-tail Bat. Only one definite call was recorded for Gould?s Wattled Bat. More bat calls were recorded when the Anabat was pointed over the wetland due to the large number of insects above the water compared to the areas above the canopy of the surrounding River Red Gums and other large trees.
