Recovering KI Narrow-leaved Mallee Woodland Threatened Ecological Community- NLM |
Abstract: |
The Kangaroo Island Narrow-leaved Mallee Woodland ecological community (NLM Community) is endemic to the eastern half of Kangaroo Island (KI). It occurs in one of the most heavily cleared parts of KI (only about 15% of native vegetation remaining) and has, itself, been heavily cleared. The NLM Community is consequently highly fragmented and often restricted to roadsides. The NLM Community provides habitat for at least six nationally-listed threatened flora species and another 25 plant species that are listed as threatened under the South Australian National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972. A further three nationally listed threatened animals may also use the NLM Community as part of their habitat. This project aims to remove impediments to the recovery of the NLM Community by: 1) Mapping 90% of the distribution of the NLM Community. 2) Undertaking Continuous Video Transect Monitoring of 500km of roadside NLM vegetation to provide a baseline dataset of vegetation condition, structure, diversity, and level of weed invasion. 3) Surveying 200km of roadside vegetation to establish the distribution of EPBC and State listed plant species. 4) Surveying 2,100ha of NLM Community for the presence of Asparagus declinatus (bridal veil) infestation and undertaking bridal veil control and eradication at targeted sites. |
