Survey/Project Name: Kangaroo Spotlight Monitoring in Flinders Ranges National Park
Abstract: Management of total grazing pressure is a major priority for the maintenance of biodiversity and regeneration of native vegetation communities on the Flinders Ranges National Park. An intensive program of feral goat control commenced in 1993 and broadscale rabbit control works have been undertaken to capitalise on the impact of Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease. A management program for native herbivores commenced in 1999 that aims to reduce Euro densities in two key vegetation communities in the north-east section of the park. Vehicular based spotlight transects have been conducted at 3 month intervals to monitor the changes in relative abundance of the dominant macropod species (Red Kangaroos, Euros and Western Grey Kangaroos). Data has been collected as the number of animals sighted and perpendicular distance from the transect to enable density estimates to be calculated using the Distance program. Results of a vehicle based spotlight counts to monitor kangaroo numbers in areas where kangaro culling has been in place since 1999. Programs are conducted at 3 monthly intervals. Frequency of monitoring is variable from 1996 - 1997 and quarterly from 1998 - 2005 and is ongoing.
