BDBSA Project Metadata Detail

Survey/Project Number: 40          Total No. of Sites: 60
Survey/Project Name: Strzelecki Dunefields
Abstract: This project aims to conduct a biological survey to examine the possible effects of production gas wells on the flora and fauna in the Simpson-Strzelecki Dunefields bioregion, north-east South Australia, between 1983 and 1992.

Start Date: 01/07/1988      End Date: 27/03/1992
Survey Type: Vegetation and Fauna

Study Area Description: The Della Land System is an area of longitudinal red sand dunes possessing characteristic associations of interdune and dune land units. Interdune units are subdivided by sandy swales grading to heavy cracking clay swales. The Marqualpie Land System consists of irregular and longitudinal red sand dunes with varying swales based on differing soil type, and broad areas of sandplain. Within the boundaries of the Della land systems in north east of SA, in the Innamincka Regional Reserve Encompasses two waterholes: Toolachee Oil and Gas Field and Burke-Dulligari Oil and Gas Field. All sites fall on the 1:100000 Dullingari mapsheet (7041).
Objectives
Vegetation: A survey carried out by Jake Gillen and Julian Reid as consultants for SANTOS to examine the possible effects of production gas wells in the Strzelecki Dunefields on the flora and fauna.
Fauna: *** No fauna survey objectives recorded
Methodology
Vegetation: Standard Biological survey methods used - see report for details. All species present, annual and perennial within 30-40m either side of pitfall line were recorded with relative abundance, life cycle stage and estimate of bare earth. Physical environment and vertebrate impact and presence were also
Fauna: Standard biological survey methods - see report for details. At each site are two trapping lines of 5 pitfalls, one line in a dune habitat and the other in an interdune habitat. Done for well, off-well and control sites. At each pitfall line 10 Elliot traps were established briefly but due to low capture rate they were discontinued in the permanent programme.
