Survey/Project Name: Yorke Peninsula
Abstract: This project aims to conduct a biological survey to classify and map the floristic composition and structure of the vegetation groups in parts of the Yorke Peninsula, South Australia. This survey links with the Mid North Survey (1992) [Project 49], and it is hoped that a further smaller survey will link this area to previous surveys conducted in the Adelaide Hills (1986) and the Adelaide Plains region.

Study Area Description: Gently undulating topography with an average elevation of 91m. A central spine of hills runs down the leg of the Peninsula reaching a maximum elevation of 244m near Arthurton. North of the head of St Vincent's Gulf occurs a low range of hills, the Southern Hummocks, with a maximum elevation of 330m. Rainfall varies from 500mm per year around Maitland to 360mm near Price. On the foot, coastal heath and dune vegetation occur (along the coast), while further inland, vegetation consists of a dense mallee woodland. Further north low and low open woodlands occur as well as tall shrublands dominated by a variety of mallee species. Many salt lakes and swamps exist on the peninsula and the main vegetation types associated with them are samphire shrublands, Gahnia tussock grasslands and open scrub of Melaleuca halmaturorum. Area from south of 33* latitude to the toe of Yorke Peninsula bounded by the coast to the west and Zone 54 to the east (although 3 mapsheets occur in zone 54: Inkerman, Lochiel and Wakefield).
Objectives
         Vegetation: To classify and map the floristic composition and structure of the vegetation groups of the area. This survey links with the Midnorth Survey (1992) and it is hoped that a further smaller survey will link this area to previous surveys conducted in the Adelaide Hills (1986) and the Adelaide Plains region.
         Fauna: *** No fauna survey objectives recorded
Methodology
         Vegetation: Complete list of plant species within a 30 x 30m quadrat using Braun/Blanquet cover abundance scores. Often the most representative vegetation was found along road reserves, quadrats were long and thin but covered the same area as normal quadrat (900m2) ie 10 x 90m or 5 x 180m.
