Survey/Project Name: Scoping the Shoreline Lipson to Streaky Bay
Abstract: The Scoping The Shoreline 2006 - 2009 survey focussed on monitoring the impact of coastal activities on Eyre Peninsula resident shorebirds. The aims: -to identify the impact of threats facing resident shorebird populations on Eyre Peninsula -to use the information collected to guide planning and coastal management The objectives -to assess the level of threat facing resident shorebirds on Eyre Peninsula -to record the presence and abundance of resident shorebirds -to survey and map Hooded Plover breeding territories -to identify potential sites for monitoring Hooded Plover breeding pairs Target species: all resident shorebirds using Eyre Peninsula's sandy ocean beaches and sheltered embayments; Pied Oystercatcher, Sooty Oystercatcher, Red-capped Plover, Hooded Plover, Masked Lapwing, Banded Lapwing, Banded Stilt and Black-winged Stilt. The project consisted of 51 sampling sites across the Eyre Peninsula coastline and 6 coastal communities; Streaky Bay, Elliston, Coffin Bay, Port Lincoln, Tumby Bay and Thistle Island. Involved long-time local bird-watchers, Friends of Parks groups and Southern Eyre Birds members. The project encourages local communities to take responsibility for monitoring and managing the impacts of increased human activity on their own beaches. Sites were selected from beach-nesting shorebird records that span at least three decades. Sites include the high energy sandy beaches of Western and Southern Eyre Peninsula and the low energy small bays of Eastern Eyre Peninsula. Other variables influencing site selection include protected/unprotected areas, baited/unbaited hinterland, distance from access points and/or settlement. Survey sites are 1 km transects. Scopers walk along the low water mark noting all evidence of disturbance and counting all resident shorebirds present, scanning 180 degrees ahead as they walk. Observations are recorded on data sheets modified from Maguire (2006).
