Survey/Project Name: DROUGHT ACTION PLAN (DAP) FOR MDB THREATENED FRESHWATER FISH
Abstract: During the period of diminished inflows into the South Australian Murray-Darling Basin (SA MDB) (2006 to 2010), populations of five species of small and medium-bodied freshwater fish of national or state conservation significance in the SA MDB (Yarra Pygmy Perch, Murray Hardyhead, River Blackfish, Southern Purple-Spotted Gudgeon and Southern Pygmy Perch) were exposed to a considerable threat of extirpation. The SA Department of Environment and Natural Resources initiated the Drought Action Plan (DAP) for SA MDB threatened freshwater fish populations with the aim of providing a framework for the management and conservation of five fish species during unfavourable conditions. During 2008 to 2011 the DAP was underpinned and informed by extensive monitoring of wild populations. REFERENCE: Bice C, Hammer M, Leigh S, Zampatti B (2011). Start Date: 01/01/2008      End Date: 30/06/2011
Survey Type: Fauna only

Study Area Description: The study area is quite large with sites from the following catchments: Lower Murray, Bremer River, Marne River, Angas River, Tookayerta Creek, Hindmarsh Island, Finniss River, Lake Alexandrina, Inman River, Goolwa Channel, Riverland
Objectives
Vegetation: *** No vegetation survey objectives recorded
Fauna: The DAP Action Plan for South Australian threatened freshwater fish populations aimed to provide a framework for the management and conservation of five threatened native fish species that were placed under the threat of extirpation in the Lower Lakes during the critical flow period of the recent millenium drought. As part of the DAP, 28 significant sites for these species were monitored from 2008-2011 to track the status of the five species.
Methodology
