Survey/Project Name: Sandy Desert
Abstract: This project aims to conduct a biological survey across the north-east of South Australia. This Sandy desert survey is part of the Biological Survey of SA programme run by the Biological Survey and Monitoring group in Department for Environment and Heritage (DEH). Survey areas defined in a DEH spatial layer are managed by the DEH Environmental Information Group. METHODOLOGY: 1. At vegetation mapping sites (VMS) the dominant overstorey and understorey plant species, and perennial plant species with a Braun-Blanquet cover-abundance score greater than 1, were recorded. 2. Plant height data were not recorded. 3. Either a subset of the complete physical dataset (such as slope, aspect and landform), or no physical data were recorded. NOTE: A modified standard Biological Survey methodology, Vegetation Mapping methodology, was used during this project at sites identified by the label prefix 'VMS'.

Study Area Description: Dune swale systems of the Simpson, Tirari and Pedirka Deserts. Also includes sites on major ephemeral drainage systems eg Kalacoopah and Warburton Creeks and swamp areas on cracking clays. Survey sites are primarily encompassed by the boundaries of three bioregions. The Simpson & Tirari Deserts are covered by the Simpson-Strzelecki Bioregion with MUL sites to the east of the Birdsville Track. All OOL sites occur on the Dalhousie mapsheet, EYR00601-EYR00801 sites occur on the Curdimurka map sheet, FLO00601(Kopperamanna) and FLO00701 & FLO00801 (Marree). Pedirka Desert Sites (TOD, HAM, ENU) are within the Finke Bioregion with additional sites (HAM00601-HAM00801) occurring on the Oodnadatta mapsheet and TOD00501-TOD00801 occurring on the Wintinna mapsheet . Survey (OAK) sites also occur in the Great Victoria Desert Bioregion.
Objectives
         Vegetation: To sample the range of vegetation associations systematically for flora and fauna using Standard Biological Survey of South Australia.

Methodology
         Vegetation: Standard Biological Survey of South Australia methods. Rapid assessment sites or veg mapping sites (prefix VMS) were also used extensively throughout this project. They capture the same data as the standard survey methodology; but only record perennial species and those with a cover abundance greater than 1. Plant height recordings were not taken. During VMS survey in 2001 (16 sites) physical data such as slope, aspect, landform were collected.
