Survey/Project Name: Vegetation Change Monitoring (Coffin Bay NP)
Abstract: Aim of the 2 vegetation transects was to monitor change in vegetation over time in Coffin Bay National Park, and to demonstrate the decline of Sheoak (Allocasuarina verticillata) and subsequently the recruitment of Leucopogon parviflorus. Survey start date was 2005. The overstorey plant species consited mainly of Leucopogon parviflorus, Myoporum parvifolium and Allocasuarina verticillata. Quadrats every 100m from start point. Large quadrats 10 x 5m, with 5 small quadrats within each large quadrat (0.4 x 0.4 m, every 1 m).
Start Date: 01/02/2005      End Date: 01/02/2015
Survey Type: Vegetation Only
Study Area Description: *** No study area description recorded
Vegetation: 2 transects were set up to monitor changes in vegetation, percent cover of native grasses in woodlands were measured.
Fauna: *** No fauna survey objectives recorded
Vegetation: Large quadrats Leuco size classes 1 0 - 0.5 m 2 0.5 - 1.3 m 3 > 1.3 m & healthy (young mature) 4 Mature 1.3 - 2 m 5 Senescent 6 dead standing 7 dead fallen Other species only counted if > 0.5 m Starting tree at Eagle's Nest transect is a Melaleuca 53H 518042, 6184354, WGS 84. Eagle's Nest transect is on bearing 304 degrees from tree. Reef Point transect starting point ?is post? 53H 051782 6182965 WGS 84 Reef Point transect bearing is 190 - 193 degrees Quadrats 10 x 5 m every 100 m from start tree. Marked with jarrah post at 100 m mark . Myoporums not counted as individuals, only as % cover; only live Myoporum counted as % cover. Dead trees (sheoaks and melaleucas) selected haphazardly from within or near quadrats or transect (not a throrough survey of what was there) and circumference measured at approx 1.3 m above base. Height est. from material remaining (prob underestimate) Noted if class 1 leucos assoc with live / dead / no Myoporum parviflorus L or Y = mostly live myo w/i 20cm radius N = mostly no myo (bare ground, rock or another plant) w/i 20 cm radius D = mostly dead myo w/i 20 cm radius quadrat sketch available - with raw data file Small quadrats 5 small quadrats in each large quadrat, with bottom left corner starting at 101m, then at 102m, 103m etc, unless there is large obstacle obscuring ground eg. tree, then quadrat moved up 1 m each small quadrat 40 cm x 40 cm (same as used for germination trials) % projected cover estimated by eye by Tom and Ray ? % cover of weedy grass not recorded quadrat sketch available - with raw data file
Fauna: *** No vertebrate methodology recorded
