Survey/Project Name: HOODED PLOVERS SURVEYS Kangaroo Island
Abstract: This project refers to count data from the Hooded Plover/Oystercatcher sp./Red-capped Plover count that is held bienially on Kangaroo Island, in conjunction with Birds Australia counts in Victoria and elsewhere. Hooded Plovers are the primary focus of this biennial count, but Pied and Sooty Oystercatchers are also counted and Red-capped Plover sightings (in 2010 only so far), as they are also beach-nesting birds with similar management needs. This is a volunteer survey, that DENR Kangaroo Island has coordinated since around 2000, but counts were conducted prior to this since about the mid 1980s.
